The Ministry of the Interior is responsible for proposing and implementing the Government ' s policy on:
public safety
the promotion of the conditions for the exercise of fundamental rights, in particular personal freedom and security, in the terms established in the Spanish Constitution and in the laws that develop them
senior command and direction and coordination of State Security Forces and Corps
the powers conferred on it by the legislation on private security
those attributed to it by the legislation on aliens
the International Refugee Protection Regime, the Stateless Persons Regime and Protection of Displaced Persons
The administration and regime of penitentiary institutions
Carrying out the necessary actions for the development of electoral processes
the exercise of civil protection powers
and those attributed in terms of traffic, road safety and sustainable mobility.
The Minister of the Interior, as the head of the Department, is responsible for the direction of all the services of the Ministry, the superior command of the State Security Forces and Bodies and the other functions indicated in article 61 of Law 40/2015, of 1 October, on the Legal Regime of the Public Sector, as well as those attributed to him by other laws or special rules.
