The Ministry of the Interior is responsible for the proposal and execution of the Government’s policy on citizen security; the promotion of the conditions for the exercise of fundamental rights, in particular personal freedom and security, in the terms established in the Spanish Constitution and in the laws that develop them; the superior command, and the direction and coordination of the State Security Forces and Corps; the competences entrusted to it by the legislation on private security; also the competences attributed to it by the legislation on foreigners; the regime of international protection of refugees, regime of stateless persons and protection of displaced persons; the administration and regime of penitentiary institutions; the realization of the necessary civil security processes
The Minister of the Interior, as the head of the Department, is responsible for the direction of all the services of the Ministry, the superior command of the State Security Forces and Bodies, and the other functions indicated in article 61 of Law 40/2015, of 1 October, on the Legal Regime of the Public Sector, as well as those attributed to him by other laws or special rules.
